Camuso Named to Watch List & Other Wizardry
Former Sorcerer standout Samantha Camuso has been named to the NFCA/ASA 25-player watch list as a candidate for national collegiate player of the year. Sammy currently leads UCLA in hitting at .383 and also paces the Bruins in a host of other offensive categories, despite being a freshman. On April 8 she was also honored as Pac-10 Player of the Week as she led UCLA to a trio of wins over Stanford and Cal.
Sorcerer player and Notre Dame frosh shortstop Katie Fleury scored the first run in the school's new Melissa Cooke Stadium in a 10-5 Big East win over Villanova. Later she hit the first Fighting Irish homer in the new complex in a game against Rutgers.
Wearing the "We Love Delmar - Forever in Our Game" hair ribbon that she received at the memorial for her former pitching coach - Sorcerer co-founder Delmar Himango - Cal sophomore Marissa Drewrey blanked Oregon St. 3-0 for her 22nd win. It was her eighth shutout of the season. Marissa, 22-10 with a 1.68 ERA, 24 complete games and 220 strikeouts through April 13, had been the March 25 Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week.
Illinois St. junior Amber Smith virtually did it all in an MVC victory over Bradley. Smith had a five-inning no-hitter, and after being relieved and her team losing the lead, hit two homers, the last with two outs in the bottom of the seventh for a 5-3 win. She had all five RBI. Smith made NFCA third team All-American as a freshman and broke the school career homer mark in her sophomore campaign.
Former student/player Julie Stauder led U.C. Davis in hitting through April 13 with a .302 average. Stauder, a junior infielder, also led the Aggies with 27 runs and 22 walks. As a Sorcerer, she is perhaps best remembered for a seventh inning RBI single to win the 2002 18U national championship.
Marshall University senior infielder Samantha Rodriguez's two-run homer April 13 guided the Thundering Herd to an 11-0 win over UAB. Sam is hitting .262 with nine homers and ranks second on the team in HRs, doubles, triples, total bases and slugging percentage. She was a member of Sorcerer's 2003 18U national champions.
